Neem House was architecturally designed and built in the traditional Arab/Swahili vernacular.The house, situated on a coral outcrop and surrounded by numerous large Neem trees, is constructed from coral/limestone block, has traditional boriti pole ceilings and beautiful Galana slate on the floors.Neem House is approximately 350 m from the beach,accessed via the Driftwood beach club or down one of several lanes.There is a wonderful pool at Neem House.Built in classic Arabic style, it is over 2 meters deep and is situated in a private courtyard. All rooms are large and spacious and feature Arabesque archways and antique carved doors sourced from Lamu and Zanzibar. Ceilings, supported by traditional ‘Boriti’ poles are in excess of three meters.Floors are tiled with cool Galana stone, sourced from the Galana river to the north of Malindi. There are four large bedrooms. Three are ensuite, with beautiful Swahili furniture, overhead ceiling fansand custom made mosquito nets. Deep verandahs surround these rooms on all sides.The large outer windows are enclosed with wrought iron and theinner window spaces (no glass) are fitted with cane blinds or teak shutters.This creates a very open and cool living space.

You have a choice: fresh water here or sea below down just a few steps, which lead to Shela beach.Visit Lamu Old Town (UNESCO world heritage site): By boat, or on foot along the beach, visiting the old city of Lamu is an absolute must, you must do it during these holidays. A bit like in Shela, you will be transported directly back into the 17th century. No cars, and the alleyways, each one narrower than the last, form a labyrinth from which the local children will easily show you the way out.Go shopping in Lamu Town or Shela Village, visit the fish market (early morning) and stroll along the quay in the evening, stopping off at Marianne and Franck at the Lamu House Hotel.Also visit the fort, dating from the 1800s, the Mnarani and Riyadh a Mosques, and the Lamu Museum where you can trace the entire history of Lamu archipelago.Do not miss the Donkey Sanctuary either. This free veterinary center is essential for the economic life of Lamu Island where, in the absence of cars, some 2000 or 3000 donkeys provide transport for heavy loads. The health of these animals is severely tested, and the veterinarians do a remarkable job.Deep sea fishing: Several possibilities for fishing are available from Shela beach. From small-scale fishing in the channel right in front of the house, where bream can be caught with just a shrimp as bait, to tuna, king fish and the legendary swordfish, further out in the ocean. A large terrace surrounding the whole building is situated beneath a pillared roof thatched with Makuti. The apartments are furnished with typical local furniture and accessories and fully equipped with crockery, cutlery, bedding, fridge and ceiling fans. As the building is situated upon a small hill, you can always feel a light breeze from the ocean. The premises are, unfortunately, not accessible for wheelchairs. During the day, reliable service staff is available who are replaced by two Askaris over night who in their work are supported by a radio controlled alarm system which is connected to a private security firm. All bedrooms have comfortable bed nets.On the coastal road and in the nearby village Ukunda one can buy in well equipped supermarkets all things Europeans need such as personal hygiene items, groceries, fruit and vegetables as well as beverages of all kinds whereby imported spirits are relatively expensive. Fresh meat can be bought in white tiled butcher shops, clothes in numerous boutiques. Shoes according to European standards, however, are only available in Mombasa.Fresh fruit and vegetables can certainly also be bought from stalls where African women sell their own garden harvest. For those who not only want to cultivate their privacy, manifold leisure opportunities exist apart from the already described water sports! The opportunities vary from “Mombasa by night” with a romantic dhow trip into the sunset to a candlelight dinner at Fort Jesus and an inventive excursion for curious people to one of the African homes in the vicinity. If you are not too tired in the evenings, you can visit the disco, the international casino or dine out in one of the many restaurants that are located within a radius of 5 kilometres offering international, Italian, Chinese, Indian or – naturally – native cuisine.The 8 km long, pearly and fine ground sandy beach, about 35 kilometres from Mombasa, is for many the most beautiful beach of East Africa which not only offers ideal swimming but also water sports facilities due to its crystal clear and clean water. The whole area is shielded by an about 450 km long reef that ranges from Malindi in the north to far behind Diani Beach in the south so that the ocean resembles a big lagoon.
